Seattle was settled on November 13, 1851 by Arthur A. Denny and the Denny party. Seattle's first name was New York, then Duwamps, and finally it was renamed Seattle named after Chief Noah Sealth, chief of the two tribes living in the area. The city has a population of near 600,000 and a metropolitan population of almost four million. Seattle is a hub for the Greater Puget Sound. Its nickname is the Emerald City, the result of a contest to designate a pleasant nickname for the city. It is also referred to as the Gateway to Alaska, Queen City, and Jet City, because of the local influence of Boeing.

Seattle is called the birthplace of grunge music (Nirvana) and has a reputation for high coffee consumption. Coffee companies founded in Seattle include Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's. There are also many independent espresso roasters and cafes. Seattle was ranked the most literate city in America in 2005. Moreover, a survey showed that Seattle has the highest percentage of college graduates of major U.S. cities. Seattle is home to the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, who appeared in Super Bowl 40. The Seattle Mariners are a fan-favorite baseball team, and the Seattle Supersonics have enjoyed many successful seasons in the NBA.
